Casting
is a process of manufacturing, in which a 'liquid'
material or a metal is poured into a ‘mold’
which has a desired shaped hollow cavity, and
then made to solidify. Casting can be used to
give any complex shape to the liquid metal which
is not possible through other methods. There
are different types of casting. Die casting
is one of them. When the molten metal is forced
into the cavities of the mold under high pressure
then that type of casting is referred to as
die casting. It is the best method to get finer
parts.
When aluminium or its alloys are used for
die casting then that process is called aluminium
die casting. An aluminium die casting machine
comprises of a source of molten metal; a rotatable
annular ring having a vertical axis of rotation
and being sized and shaped to carry casting
molds; a drive means, for indexing molds to
the source of molten metal by rotating the annular
ring; a demolder means for transferring ingots
from the molds and a cooling line for cooling
ingots; a conveyer for moving ingots along the
cooling line; a cooling tunnel for enclosing
the conveyer; a source of cooling water to spray
the ingots moving within the cooling tunnel;
and a countercurrent air flow to provide additional
heat exchange with the cooling ingots.
